Georgia drivers sometimes see both SR-22 and SR-22A in reinstatement instructions. They are related proof-of-insurance certificates, but the SR-22A includes a payment condition that matters.
Georgia DDS says an SR-22A policy is required after a second or later no-insurance suspension. DDS may also accept an SR-22 if it is marked “Paid In Full.” For a non-owner policy, the driver must still meet the payment and filing requirements.
What an SR-22 does
An SR-22 is filed by an authorized insurer to show that the driver has the required liability coverage. It is a certificate attached to an insurance policy, not a stand-alone policy.
Georgia’s current proof-of-financial-responsibility rule allows an SR-22 for some probationary-license situations. DDS also says a premium-financed SR-22 may be accepted when it is clearly marked and cannot be canceled for nonpayment during the first 90 days.
What makes an SR-22A different
The SR-22A is used when Georgia requires stronger evidence that coverage has been paid in advance. For multiple no-insurance convictions, DDS says the driver must maintain SR-22 or SR-22A coverage for three years from the conviction date and prepay each six-month term in full.
If an SR-22A policy is canceled during the required period, the insurer reports the cancellation to DDS and the driver’s license can be canceled again.
Do drivers without a car still need coverage?
Yes, when the reinstatement order requires it. Georgia DDS states that a driver who does not own a vehicle must obtain a non-owner SR-22A policy after a second or later no-insurance suspension. The policy provides liability protection for the named driver rather than insuring an owned vehicle.

How to avoid buying the wrong filing
- Read the DDS reinstatement notice and identify the exact violation.
- Confirm whether DDS asks for an SR-22, an SR-22A, or a paid-in-full SR-22.
- Tell the agent whether you own a vehicle.
- Ask how the six-month prepayment requirement applies.
- Confirm that the insurer will send the certificate to Georgia DDS.
